Do I have to work my notice?

Hi

Im currently working as a designer for small company and am responible for producing work for large well know companies.

Baically I'm fed up of my job and have been for a while. My boss hardly talks talks to me even though i sit next to him, I don't feel appreciated, and am on minimum wage even though I'm the sole person in the company that produces design work that will be used by large blue chip companies.

I started the job at the end of last year as a temporary job. I was told I would receive a contract after the initial three months, which I have not had(and don't wont!).

I would love to leave them in the lurch, as my boss just sits on facebook while im doing the work. Do I have to give any notice before leaving even though I have never seen or signed a work contract?

I friend of mine who studies law, said I still need to work my notice, is this true? as I have never had a contract.

If you want to get paid you MUST give your employer 4 WEEKS notice in writing of your leaving date - regardless of a contract.

If you walk out your employer can keep all the money owed to since the last pay day, demand money back from you and if you are really unlucky take you to court to sue you from breach of contact/promise.

The fact that you turn up for work, do the work and get paid constitutes a contract. BY not giving you written terms and conditions within 8 weeks of starting, your employer is breaking the law. In the absence of written terms, the statutory rules apply and these state that with under a years service, you need to give a week's notice.
