Do I have to payback my Sign On Bonus?

I left my old job for a new job that I thought would be better, salary wise and advancement potential. I received a sign on bonus of $3,500 at the new job. Meanwhile, after 6 weeks at new job, out of the blue my previous employer called me up, offered me an even Better job, more money, higher position if I would come back. I took their offer and am leaving to go back to my previous employer. So now, since I have left, my 'new job' with $3500 sign on bonus is asking that as they see it as my 'ethical responsibility', I need to pay them back the $3500 sign on bonus in 30 days.

I looked through my employment offer letter and other paperwork and could find nowhere any stipulation about having to payback a sign on bonus. Am I legally bound to pay back this sign on bonus? Do I have any legal responsibility here to pay back the sign on bonus?

If there is nothing in writing then you don't have a legal responsibility but you do have a professional, and ethical one. failure to do the "right" thing will catch up with you eventually.
