Can your employer legally ask you to reschedule a Doctor's Appointment?

A little over a month ago, I requested a sick day (hours which I have accrued), for a doctor's appointment. My boss, who is also the HR Manager, had the audacity to ask me "Is this going to take all day?" Then she says "Next time you schedule a doctor's appointment, you have to schedule it around Jamie's schedule."
Mind this, Jamie is my back-up and I am hers. Jamie has standing appointments for her children 2 days a week, which they always make accommodations for. And Jamie will just leave or walk in late whenever she wants and they won't say anything. But when it's me, they always jump on me for asking for a day off even if I have the accrued time off available.
I tried scheduling it around her schedule but I couldn't. And I informed my boss about that and she still told me that. Another thing, my boss hates me and so does Jamie. I am also the receptionist and there are 3 other people besides Jamie who can answer the phones besides Jamie. I also requested this day off about 3 weeks in advance.
I guess my question has three parts. Can your employer legally tell you when to schedule your doctor's appointments? Can they legally ask you to reschedule your doctor's appointment? In this matter, are my boss's actions legal?

The boss doesn't have to allow you to take time off, even for a doctor's appt, just because you request it. They haven't done anything illegal here. |
