Can you be fired from one department where you work for complaining about another department where you studied?

I work at research organization at my old school. Since I graduated, I complained about the program to the program administrators and my identity was revealed, purposefully revealed, despite an agreement of confidentiality. This means that I lost my reference. In graduate studies, your career is dead if you don't have a reference. The school is a Goliath of an institution, and they aren't going to do anything but silence me, as they have done so far. I feel that to protect other people from experiencing what I did, I have to go to press. An important paper is very interested in the story, and I would do this anonymously. However, the people at the school, including my employers at the research organization would be able to tell that it was me. My concern is, that even though there would be no proof that it was me (because of anonymity) since they would know by the story itself, could they fire me? My friends think that this is illegal. More specifically a threat to human rights and freedom of speech. Is this true? What is legal and what isn't and what are my options?

Cheers!

Sure, unless you have a contract or in some cases what they are doing is illegal and you are protected under a whistle-blower law you can be fired for pretty much anything or nothing at all. It is called "employment at will".
