Can my husbands employer deny him weekends off work when it is not compulsory for him to work them?

My husband does not HAVE to work weekends, instead his contract states that he is expected to work SOME weekend shifts. However his employer puts him down for a weekend shift every weekend unless my husband has booked that weekend off. This is fair enough, however my husbands contract states that if he wants a weekend off he needs to give at least 2 weeks notice - this is where there's a problem... often, my husband can state a weekend that he'd like to book off well in advance of 2 weeks before and his employer denies him that weekend off - sometimes saying there aren't enough people working that weekend, etc.

Can his employer deny him a weekend off even though it's not compulsory for him to work weekends and he has given more than 2 weeks notice?

Unless your husband stated that he couldn't work weekends before being hired then they can schedule him to work any time they see fit and deny any time off he request that they want. You're only rights in most States are a minimum wage, safe working conditions, and they can't work you over 16 hours a day. Most states don't require vacation time, sick leave, scheduled lunches(lunch breaks at all for that matter).

Does the contract define "some"

some could mean 1 a month or 50 a year.......

without knowing where you live this question can not be answered definitively but in general in the US this would be legal to do. maybe not ethical, if your husband was misled, but legal........

edit the question to include location, the laws in some parts of the world are much more employee friendly then others.... where you are is going to make a HUGE difference in the outcome of this.
