No, they can't force you to stay longer than the notice period stated in your contract.

You don't have to stay the extra six weeks if you don't want to.

If you contract says that you do not need to give any notice yet then you need not give any and the month you offered is a simple professional courtesy which your employer can not extend. He can ask you to do so of course and will be more inclined to give you a good reference if you oblige him.He still has to be honest in your reference but good-will would add some thing all the same.

If you have a job waiting for you then of course you have to keep to your own plans but if not, if you are simply leaving because you do not want this job any longer, then do consider the extension.. you may even get past your reasons for wanting to leave in the first place. On the other hand if the work or place or people are making you miserable, consult only your own feelings.

If you gave the notice to them, it's your choice. However, make sure you understand the repercussions if you stay. Sounds like a complication from what you stated. If you wish to leave, then it's probably best to cut the apron strings at the end of your original notice. But if your employer is in a bind, (hard to believe with so many people looking for work), then it is up to you to help them out or not.
