Can I get fired for making a joke about previously being fired at work?
I have a very dry sense of humour, the other day I made a joke about being fired from my last role. I work for a large firm with c.200,000 employees worldwide. My superior has taken my joke quite seriously and has decided to notify my HR rep. What can happen here? My dry sense of humour...its gotten me in hot water here...

Unless you work in Montana, you work in an 'employment - at - will' state. That means that they may terminate you at any time for any reason (as long as it isn't discriminatory like age, gender, disability, etc) - or for no reason at all. |

You explain that you were joking. |

I suggest you go to HR and say that you are concerned about why your superior has reported this when it was clearly a joke. Say you are worried they have a hidden agenda and may have bad motives towards you. This kind of joke is not the kind of thing you'd report to HR. |

Well, if you were fired from your previous job and lied about it on your application, then yes, you are definitely in hot water. However, if it truly was a joke and you left on good terms, there is nothing to worry about other than your supervisor probably giving you a talking to about what is appropriate and what is not. I don't see anything truly wrong in a joke like that, but it would all depend on what you said and how you said it to be honest. It might cause me to look into your history a little deeper just to be sure I hadn't missed something myself. |
