Why does a Diploma (HE) Nursing take 3 years to complete, like a degree?

Im asking this because im doing a diploma at university in nursing, but i could have chosen to do the degree which takes the same time of 3 years to complete.
So i want to know why both the diploma and the degree both take 3 years to complete.
Ive just started my course but many of the lesson last only for 2 hours at the most, and i dont have that many lessons during the week either.
