What is it like to work in a retirement home?

Category: Health Care

I've been considering applying for work at a nursing home but I've heard stories that it's awful work with low pay.

Is this true? I did work experience in an old folks home in grade 9 but I didn't get to see very much of what goes on because was so young.

So what is your experience in working in aged care? Pro's and con's?

Thanks so much! :)

After working in Long Term Care for 13 years of course it has it's ups and downs. Depending on the career you are thinking about can have quite a bit to do with your overall job satisfaction too. The various careers in a nursing home range from entry level type careers in dietary, housekeeping, maintenance or laundry. If you choose to further educate yourself, jobs range from Certified Nursing Assistants, Licensed Practical Nurses, Registered Nurses, Physical, Occupational, and Speech therapists, Therapy Assistants, Activities Directors and assistants. In my experience, if you choose to be a nurse not and aide, or therapist or therapy assistant, your salary will be fairly comfortable.

Working with elderly can be very rewarding, and fun. There is of course a nursing shortage and therapist shortage, so your workload could be heavy at times. Also, regardless of the position it is almost 100% guaranteed you will work evenings, holidays, and weekends at some time during your career, if that does not bother you, then you will be okay. Most companies offer shift and weekend differentials (paying you more in your hourly wage to work those times). Good Luck.
