I'm going to school for Dental Assisting in August. I'm starting to have second thoughts about it and I am thinking of going for RN instead. What should I do?

Ask yourself if you'd rather be working with teeth/mouths and their related instruments, or you'd rather work with people's general health. In my experience they both require you to be able to make people feel comfortable, but dentistry is more technical with tools and very specific to the mouth, RNs tend to ask more questions and have more "people work" like inspecting parts of the body all over, explaining what the doctor does. RN is more of an advisor and inspector to the patient, Dental assistant is more of technician with tools and specific procedures. You'd definitely have a more broad base of people/problems to deal with in the RN so if you like predictable work the Dentistry would be a better avenue. Also working hours for DA's would be a lot more regular whereas RN probably requires more flexibility.

Deciding on a career is one of the most important decisions you can take in your lifetime. My son needed assistance with his career choices recently, so he visited the website in the box below, which has some sensible guidance on career decision-making. It really did the trick for him because he now knows exactly what he wants, and more importantly what he needs to do to get there!
