Registered Medical Assistant questions?

Category: Health Care

Currently going to school to become a RMA... Naturally, I have a lot of questions. I'm hoping to receive answers from other RMAs.

Was the test to become registered hard? What were some of the materials that you used to prepare yourself for the test?

What are some of the better points of working for a Dr vs in a hospital?

I live in New Jersey... more and more I have been hearing that LPNs are being phased out of hospitals and that RMAs will be running the "show", is that true?

Something that I'm not too clear on, are RMAs about CNAs on the command chain?

What's some good advice for the interview process?

Thanks so much in advance!

There is a nursing shortage and MAs are not nurses. LPNs are. MAs do not have anywhere close to the same scope of practice, especially in states such as Oregon and Washington, the states with the two highest scopes of practice for LPNs. They can do almost anything an RN can do, except hang blood and chemo.

The VA Hospital system hires LPNs, as does Kaiser. In fact, Kaiser is getting rid of their RNs in favor of LPNs.

Just as an everyday person, I'm not sure how MAs will be able to take over for LPNs in hospitals since MAs are unable to do certain tasks that LPNs may perform such as keeping IVs going. Hospitals and medical centers may hire phlebotomists or ekg technicians (though not supposed to be too many jobs for either by themselves) in which both are typically covered in MA school. It seems as though a lot of medical facilities may want to hire a multi-skilled technician (MST) which is also referred to as a "patient care technician". The training for MST/PCT is usually a combination of medical assistant and nurse's aide training so that the medical center may hire someone with a "multitude of skills" and save on costs (between us and the wall :) Just fyi that the nursing (and mental health/social work) field is supposed to have a high burn-out rate, and that includes all levels of the industry.

If you're considering training for any of the trades, please forgo those private $$ for-profit tech schools and instead consider the more affordable county vo-tech school or community college as long as the program is accredited within the industry.

For general career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search 'medical assistants', 'licensed practical nurses', 'nursing and psychiatric aides' or such.
