Questions about medicare and medical suppliers?

Category: Health Care

I currently work for a medical supplier, my boss says that Medicare can just show up unexpectedly and go through a check of what we supply. Is it true that they can just show up unexpectedly without our knowing. Second my boss has me writing his name (not signing) on surveys and checking off on signed surveys that are are blank. Is this a form of fraud? He sends this surveys to an agency that I do not know of.

I did medical front office and medical billing and coding for over 20 years. I have been teaching billing and coding for five years. I tell my students never to sign their name to any claim forms.

Medicare can indeed show up at any time. One thing I tell my students is "Don't mess with the federal government, you will lose."

You need to report what he is doing right away. Here is one source I got from the internet. They will tell you how to proceed. This is very serious business. There was a clinic I heard of that was raided and everyone except the file clerk was arrested. You can be arrested for fraud even if you don't benefit from it personally.

Contact these folks first thing Tuesday morning. I would also recommend you contact Medicare directly. If you tell me the state you live in I can give you more details about how to contact Medicare. Make sure you document every conversation. Include the date, time, phone number and the name of who you spoke with. Begin a file. You may wish to have two files, one for the attorney and one for Medicare. I would also print out this yahoo answer page. In case charges are brought this shows that you are giving a good faith effort to comply with all Medicare laws.

Usually I would advise you to stop doing what he is having you do right away. However, an attorney and/or Medicare might ask you to continue to do as he asks in order to catch him. So don't just go in there and flat-out refuse to do as he asks because it could tip him off. Make sure you have an attorney to protect yourself and your interests and cooperate fully with Medicare.

It sounds like he is committing fraud. Medicare should investigate what his company is doing because Medicare is paying his claims which from many suppliers are fraudulent. Suppliers have a bad reputation right now and under the Obama administration, they are trying to recover millions in fake claims made by medical suppliers. I hope you arent going along with your boss. In fact, I hope you report this because it is our taxpayer money that is paying him through Medicare. That is one of the reasons Medicare is costing us so much.

A medical profession is always worth considering, from nurses and surgeons right down to hospital cleaning personnel. The website in the box below has some brilliant instruction on joining this splendid line of work. My brother got some brilliant guidance from there before getting a profession as a medical admin assistant.
