Please help! psych vs. nursing?
I know everyone will say go the nursing route... and I've been thinking of doing that. But honestly, my TRUE passion lies in psych. I want to get my phd and go into research or teaching or even having my own practice. I've never been more passionate about a subject in my entire life. Nursing really interested me too, but I'm terrible with chemistry and I'm not as passionate about it as I am about psych. I know either career would fulfill me. My parents are telling me to do nursing...
What do I do???

I'm dual majoring in Psychology and Biology to apply to medical school. Done with my psyc degree. Honestly, I love Psychology. Not enough people put enough emphasis on psychology. Nursing is a good career but you have to be passionate about it. Nursing consists of a lot of Biology, Chemistry, and Anatomy. All of those classes in depth as well. If you love Psyc, trust me, GO FOR IT! If you understand psyc and love it as much as I do, you should definitely do psychology. Honest truth is, even if you do a phd in psychology and have your own practice, the money won't nearly be as great as it would be in nursing. I did an internship at a family and child psychiatry and even a phd in psyc doesn't have the value that it should. At the end of the day, it's not about money. It's what you enjoy doing. If you are passionate about Psyc, GO FOR IT, the money isn't horribly bad either. If you enjoy the field, you will be happy with the money rewarded. If you aren't passionate about nursing, it'll be a job that will make you miserable and no patient deserves to be taken care of by a nursing who isn't passionate and working at the hardest with the patients good in mind. |

Do what you are more passionate for. But in nursing you will have a lot more job opportunities. Lots or RN's become Nurse Practitioners, Nurse Anesthetist, Director of nursing, hospital administrators, and much more. All of the positions I just mentioned are all above six figures. I'm not trying to lure you with money but just think wisely. Psych is also great especially if you can open up your own practice... Yeah that's all I can say about Psych :D |
