My talents do not lie in my area of interest career-wise; what should I do?

I am a seventeen year old male who just graduated from high school. I will attend college next year on an art scholarship. I really enjoy art and I consider myself talented. However, I have never felt like it is my calling in life, I have always just entertained the thought of art related careers because I am good at it. I am interested in being a doctor to help other people. I am very interested in MSF or Doctors Without Borders. I am average in science and math classes but they do not interest me as the art does. I feel like being a doctor would help me feel worthwhile and needed. Is it worth following my sudden, spontaneous interest in the medical field even if it would not necessarily be a strength of mine? Any other suggestions or comments would be appreciated.

Since you are going to college on an art scholarship it sounds like must study art in college. In order to get into medical school after college you can have a college degree in almost anything. History, art, politics, nutrition, etc. You only have to meet the requirements to be admitted to medical school. So in addition to studying art you can take the physics, anatomy, chemistry etc that is required. Then when you graduate you will have your art degree and be qualified to apply to medical school. I would suggest that you wait until second semester of your freshman year in college and start taking medical school requirements. I suggest you make an appointment with a career counselor also in college. People who make it through medical school usually have a burning desire to be a physician. You seem to have picked up the notion that you have to be a physican to have self worth. As you mature this notion will rightly change. Good luck. By the way medical school is difficult and expensive.
