My future Career(s)......?

I'm only in 6th grade moving on to 7th grade and I already know exactly what I want to do when I get older. When I'm 15 I plan on working at Chick-fil-A and getting one of their scholarships to go to college. I want to go to school to become a rehibilitation/physical thearapy nurse and then later on in my life go back to school to become a children's pediatrician.

I really want to work in healthcare, but I realize it can take many years to finally become a doctor or nurse. I have a few questions maybe you can answer.

- How many years of college does the Chikc-fil-A offer?

- How many years of medical school and college do I need to become a rehibilatation nurse?

- How much to rehibilatation nurses make?

- How many years of medical school and college do I need to become a doctor?

-And somebody told me you aren't allowed to work while you are in medical school. Is that true?

Oh ya: Im already in middle school, I play baseball and football, I make all A's, Im in GT program (like search), and Im getting an award next week for outstanding GPA. I am also going to be in Beta Club next year. I know this is what I want to do, mostly because I go to the hospital every week to help and visit my Papa. He has physical thearapy and I think its great they can teach him how to do everything again. :)

Pediatricians are doctors, which are entirely different from nurses.

I've never heard of the Chick-fil-a scholarship before, but if you don't get it, don't sweat it. Most people who get Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) degrees, and virtually all medical school students, take out student loans to go to school. They then pay back the loans when they graduate and are working full-time.

You don't go to medical school to be a nurse.

To be a Registered Nurse (RN), it takes at least two years of course work at a community college, then you take a test in order to be licensed as a nurse in the state you want to work in.

If you want to make more money, you can do two additional years at a Nursing school and get a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. And if you want to be a nurse who has advanced practice specialization, you do two more years of schooling afterward to get a Master's of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree. When you get the MSN, you get the title of "Nurse Practitioner (NP)". There are NPs who specialize in pediatrics and family care. At least, that's probably what I'm going into myself.

Doctors are different from nurses, though.

They go on to medical school and learn different things, though obviously both can treat patients.

To be a doctor, you first must get a Bachelor's degree in any field (though you'll have to take certain prerequisite courses in college), pretty much have a sterling (3.6+) GPA, take the medical school admissions test (MCAT), go through four more years of medical school, and do clinical rotations/residencies for about three years. Then you take a licensure exam to get the M.D. degree.

So here's an overview of how long it takes to be an MD doctor:

4 years undergraduate/college + 4 years medical school + 3 years residency = 11 years

Whereas to be a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) or a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP), here's how long it can take:

4 years undergraduate (to get a BSN) + 2 years nursing school = 6 years

As to whether or not someone can work in medical school --- legally, no school can forbid you from doing what you want on your own time. I'm sure there are plenty of med school students who have night jobs such as doing desk duty to pay for food and stuff. But medical school is extremely rigorous, and it's hard to go through and pass med school if you have another job.

You're really, really, really young though!

Keep it up with the good grades and your options will certainly be open to you!

As for pay for nurses, it honestly varies state to state. After all, living in San Fransisco is obviously way more expensive than Dallas!

Rehabilitation nurses, though, can average anywhere from $17 to $29 an hour:

For a two-year degree, that's not too bad :P
