I am currently attending a community college and I want to do child development. But, now I am thinking about doing something the medical field like being a Medical Receptionist. Do you think its a good idea to switch? The medical field is so popular right now. I can't really handle doing needles or anything. Also I have a major knee problem and need a desk job. I think teaching would be hard. Do you think me switching to do a medical field is a good idea? I

Being a medical receptionist would probably be a better choice for you, as with child development, you will need to be very active in order to help the children who probably have a lot of energy. Medical Receptionists however, are still not a job where you would be completely at your desk. You will still be responsible for doing some bending and twisting as well, but you're right it is a lot less that you would be needing for this type of role.

Some of the responsibilities where you would have to use some physical capabilities are, but not limited to the following:

1) Squatting when doing filing, but you could also sit down depending on the levels that the files are. You may also be required to stand on a stool to reach some of the higher folders.

2) Equipment -- some of the products i.e. gowns, paper rolls etc. for patients tables, and other products may be where you have to bend or twist to get them from.

3) Transferring -- not all the time, but there will be times where you will need to assist a person who has limited mobility onto the examination table, or into a wheelchair etc.

I hope that this helps you. The best thing however, is before you do any changes to careers, or you're unsure as to which career would be the best for you, please consult with your family doctor, and they will be able to assess which one would be the best one for you to attempt with the problems that you have with your knees.

Good luck, and I hope that it works for you.
