Is it hard to find a job as a dental hygienist?

I was thinking of becoming a dental hygienist, but I heard that it was hard to find a job as one. Is it true?

I'm not sure if it depends on the geographic location as to whether one might find work more readily. It seems as though a lot of DH jobs are on a part-time basis (and part-time employees may not get job benefits such as medical, dental, 401k plan or such) so the hygienist may work more than one job.

If still interested in the field, please consider job shadowing/observing a DH for a day or so, and also look through Dental books (at the local medical/dental school library) about dental diseases as that may either interest or disgust a person :)

Just fyi that the DH curriculum is supposed to be very intense with the student needing to learn the anatomy of the head, face and neck and classes in chemistry along with the technical coursework.

For more career info: http://www.bls.gov/oco and can search.

If considering schooling, please only consider programs accredited by the ADA: http://www.ada.org/education.aspx

Nobody relishes the thought of searching for a job, and most of us want all the help we can get. After being jobless recently I got myself a superb job after learning from the website in the box below and following their tips for a month or so. give it a try, it certainly helped me.

Yes, the market is extremely flooded for hygienists right now. For example, my best friend graduated from an accredited program in May of 2009 and she didn't find a job until January of 2010. Not to mention that this job is only 3 days a week and she is getting paid about half of what she should be making.

Of course, the market could change by the time you complete a DH program, but plan on having to relocate to an area where they are needed.
