Is being a dentist a good career option?

I would like to be a dentist (maybe lol) but I kinda would like some insight details; preferably from ppl who are dentists or who work at dental offices:)

Does the job allow for flexible hours?

Do you feel good when you finally reveal a persons pretty smile after removing braces?

Hows it feel to deal w/ the little kids that are scared to visit you lol & how do you help them realize that you're actually there to help?

Is it stressing- if so, how?

As you can tell, I'm quite interested... so if you can, please answer in as much detail:)

Thank you!!

(My boyfriend is in dental school and I helped him get in so I'm going from that)

-Hours are not really flexible, most dentists work from 8-5 Monday-Friday.

-You can ease anxiousness by demonstrating on a plastic model and/or explaining what you'll be doing. You'll figure out what it best for your client.

-It can be stressful at times. Maybe not so much with your clients but opening your own dental clinic is like running a small business (you have to gain clients, advertise, pay your employees, manage time, money etc).

To get into a dental school:

-You apply *a year* in advance!

-Great overall GPA

-Great Science GPA

-A personal statement of why you want to be a dentist

-At least 3 references (2 from professors/employer, and one from a dentist you have been observing)

-You must volunteer your time to observe a dentist, also go to those free dental clinics

-Have a great interview with the school (they contact you for this part)

This website helped my boyfriend a lot when he was applying (Stats on all the different schools): http://www.predents.com/

-Lastly, sometimes you won't get into dental school on the first shot after you get your undergrad degree. Don't be discouraged, just get all your stuff together early and apply the next year. Schools LOVE experience: volunteer, volunteer, volunteer!

Good luck to you!

They do make a lot of money and it depends if you like haveing your hands in someone elses nasty mouth full of cavities or that has an std of the mouth that you dont know about or a little kid who will bite you so i would say NO

Dentists can have flexible hours yes. Most if them work pretty hard though. The path to becoming dentist requires A LOT of hard work though.

You need to get very good grades in school especially when you get to college. You need to take a ton of science related courses and do well in them.

All within your reach if you're driven. You need to be very motivated because you're going to be spending a number of Friday nights and weekends studying while your friends are out having a good time.

Is it rewarding, most of the dentists I've talked to claim it's very rewarding.

You should try and spend a day or at least a few hours shadowing a dentist to see what a day in their life is like.
