I teach medical billing and coding.

The least expensive ways are through your community college, adult school or local ROP. I teach at a community college.

There are some entry-level openings in this field. If you are switching from another field to this one, focus on your transferable skills such as dealing well with people, good team work, experience with accounting and/or numbers, etc.

Know that the economy is really tight. I have taught medical front office and medical billing and coding. I recommend you study billing and coding because it is more advanced and some of my students get jobs in a doctor office starting as a medical front office assistant and they are hired BECAUSE they know billing and coding. It is perhaps a step down initially but they are able to get their foot in the door and eventually move up.

Your employer will not only be looking at what you do working the front office but also your attitude. If you act as if the job is beneath you, I doubt you will get very far.

Skip the internet hype. You need proper training, so go to your local community college and check out their offerings. Your community college is the best (and cheapest) place to get the training you need. Plus their Placement Office is where local hospitals, clinics, etc, recruit any new personnel they need. Check to see who regularly recruits through your CC. If the local hospitals, etc, are recruiting there, the program is respected and meets employers' needs.

It's still a low-level clerical job, but beats being a file clerk, burger-flipper, etc. You really cannot expect to make more than $10/hr - it's low-level clerical work!

With the economy the way it is, lots of people are trying to retrain so they can get some kind of work. You'd better work hard and be the top grad in your class if you want a job.
