I plan on going into nursing, but i'm not good with math, how screwed am i?
Is this going to be something that kills my chance at nursing?

Going into nursing school - basic adding, subtracting, multiplication, and division is all you need plus a little knowledge of converting measurement units such as milligrams to grams, tsp's to milliliters, liters to milliliters, etc.etc. there will probably be a course called dosage calculations that will help you incorporate it into a formula which you could use to calculate for example "drops per minute" which you would use to know how fast you run intravenous fluids into someone or formulas to find out your safe dosage range for a drug especially for children whose bodies can be so small. if theres no course, then it shouldn't be too hard to learn these on your own and then next thing you know it'll be second nature for you. I would recommend ordering "drug calculations: process and problems for clinical practice" . also alot of programs now a days require that the student take dosage tests every semester/ quarter with a certain passage rate (ours was 90%) to ensure that the student is up to par. a little review coupled with what should be embedded in your brain already should help you pass. |

In more than thirty years as an RN, I rarely had to do math more complicated than simple addition, subtraction, multiplication and division...and the fact that I'm a guy had nothing to do with it. If you've graduated from high school, you can easily handle any math problem that could come up in the course of your practice in nursing. The two things that can confuse some students early on in the USA are learning the metric system and how to tell time by the 24-hour clock - or "military time". You can learn both in a few hours. There's absolutely nothing about nursing school you can't handle. You go, girl! |

If you lack of maths skills is worrying you then just get a few home lessons from a tutor - you only need basic maths, just to brush up your abilities. There's not going to be any algebra or geometry involved, just basic maths skills. Don't let this minor problem ruin your chances of a career in nursing. |

Chemistry may be your biggest challenge, balancing chemical equations can be tricky. Make friends and get into a study group. Also there are tutors available on most campuses. If possible adjust your schedule so you have more time to study when taking challenging courses. Although math may be daunting it is like any other discipline; memorize the formulas then use a calculator for the number manipulation and you will do fine. Good Luck the PracticaL Mentor. |

You need strong math & science grades. Do you know how many people have been killed by idiot nurses who cannot calculate dosages accurately? |
