How do I get training to be a Certified Nurse Assistant?

Category: Health Care

I am currently in my third year of school working on a BSN. I want to be a CNA so that I can have extra training in the field and an edge when applying for jobs. Would this be a smart move on my part? I am a guy and I live in Missouri.

Thanks for your help.

You need to check the website in your state for the board of nursing. After taking the course Fundamentals of Nursing, which is usually a first year/first semester course, you may be eligible to sit for the CNA exam.

Working as a CNA will give you excellent patient care experience, as well as the opportunity to see what nurses do. One drawback that I see in CNAs who are attending nursing school is that they let a lot of their duties slide, thinking of themselves more as nursing students than CNAs. Unfortunately, there is no nursing student position, so if you are working as a CNA, you need to fulfill those duties. The other drawback is that the other CNAs may not accept you because you are transient. If you become a nurse and work for the same place, the CNAs and nurses may view you as a CNA and a nurse and expect you to perform CNA work that other nurses do not do.

There are many ways to become a CNA (i have mine) and i would suggest going to a trade school - i got mine at a place called the Southwest AppliedTechnology Center. These cost far less than other ways (about 180) and it is definitely worth it! In my CNA course i became CPR/Defibrillator certified as well. If you can't find any places in Missouri to do this at try an online course and then to take your test, most colleges should have a proctor that you could schedule to do so. Good luck!!

If you are in your third year of nursing school you would be qualified to work as a CNA right now.CNA does not teach you anything extra that nursing school doesn't and will have no effect on applying for a job.If you worked part time as a CNA right now the experience would be useful.
