Do you think I should be a surgeon? Would I just end up killing my patients and getting sued?

I've done dissections before in Biology. I'm ok with a scapel, but I'm not exactly a pro. I can't cut deep enough, and I'm too gentle. But, that technique is something that can be developed and honed over time.

I'm not squeamish. The sight of blood and viscera (internal organs) doesn't repulse me. I could easily look into a human body and identify organs.

My grades are good. I have straight A's. In Biology, I finished off the school year with a 101% and I got a high A on the final exam. In my Health Science class (an elective that is part of my school's medical academy), I got a 99.6% (I even got 100% on the final exam).

But, I suck at cutting! And, that's the main part of performing a surgery!

You can do it, if you really want to. No one is a pro at cutting things before they start training as a surgeon. Sure, some medical students stand out more than others in their surgical rotation, but you truly learn the skills and techniques during residency.

People die during surgery; it's the nature of the profession. It is one of the worst feelings there are, and I can't even try to describe it to you. I don't think I will ever get "used" to it, either. However, you save many more lives than you lose, and the joyous feeling you get from a successful surgery is absolutely unmatched. To me, there is no more rewarding career in medicine than surgery.

If you have specific or general questions on the path and what it takes to become a surgeon, please feel free to email me.

You can learn that, I'd go for it.

Take all the math and science you can in high school.

In college take the pre-med classes which are listed on medical school websites. You may choose any academic major. At the end of your junior year of college take the Medical College Admissions Test.

There are many medical specialties besides surgery. In medical school you may find one that you prefer. In medical school you compete for a paid post-medical school residency to learn your speciality.
