Do nurses still have fun?

Off The WallOff The Wall

I was thinking of becoming a nurse but my mum is saying it is A LOT of hard work and you are always on your feet and that shift work is not good for you. She also says that if I got married my husband wouldn't like me not being here when he comes home from work?? She also says that a lot of Matrons don't get married because they are so dedicated to their job. I want to become a nurse but I still want to have a life.

So I guess my question is can you still live a normal life as a nurse?? Do you still have free time and is it easy to make friends with other nurses and staff in the hospital??

The best part about being a nurse is that there are so many different career paths. Don't want to do the 12 hour shifts? Then what about nursing in a lab? Dr's office? School? There are many 9-5 career paths if it is important for you to be around during the evenings. Personally, even though 12 hour shifts delve into evening time, there's (usually) only 3 a week, which I think is a pretty good deal.

About the husband, it depends on your husband. Don't worry about it until you think you've found the right guy.

If you do 5 days 9-5 or 3 days 7-7, that leaves you plenty of time to have a normal life. Many nurses (at least in the US) just work part time. That's another option for you.

In my experience, the other nurses on the floor are around you quite a bit and shouldn't make it difficult to make friends.

During my clinicals, I've had fun. You really need a sense of humor to handle your patient's daughter who is a control freak or when you're cleaning up constant diarrhea from the same patient. Not to mention many patients I've had have been hilarious and tell jokes and are a pleasure to be around.

Do any hospitals around you offer volunteering? You can get a feel for what nurses go through. I would experience that, take prerequisites such as anatomy and physiology and then see how you still feel after those experiences.

Well the hours nurses put forward is astronomical, so you start to have tunnel vision.

I think the nursing field needs a new moto or slogan

"Nurses just want to have fun"

Fun? Outside work, yes. At work, no. It's a job though, and when pay day comes it gives me such a nice feeling that makes it all worth it.

I enjoy being a nurse. The work schedule fits me well. I work 7-3 pm shifts so I have time to pick up my kid and be home with family. Or you can pick a night shift 11-7, that way you're home with your kid (when you have one and you want to be a stay at home mom), get some sleep when hubby comes home and watch the kid, then wake up and go to work. Nursing has provided me time for my family and earning a decent salary at the same time.
