Do nurses have enough energy to pursue outside interests?

Category: Health Care

I've been thinking of career paths to pursue, and neonatal nursing has been in the back of my mind ever since I was present for the birth of my sister's two children and helped take care of them the first two weeks of their lives. I also have a desire to pursue music, not professionally, per say, but it's something I spend a lot of time on and have a passion for. I'd love to get my music out there and do it seriously, but not something I'd bet on having a paying career for. I love the arts - dance, drawing, writing... I have creative and artistic inclinations. I also can do well at math and the sciences when I apply myself.

I've read nursing is rewarding, albeit hard work, but I'd like to know if this kind of career is the kind that takes up all a person's focus and energy and would there be any energy left in my life to put towards my art? I just always hear how hard the career is compared to a lot of other careers. No matter what career I pursue, I'd like to be able to go home and spend time with my music.

No matter what you do, you have to make time for your hobbies.

As a nurse, time can be flexible: you might be able to work 4 10-hour shifts (3 days off, 4 days on), 3 12-hour shifts (3 days on, 4 days off), any type of part time. In addition, you're not limited to physically demanding hospital work -- I work in research and it's pretty much 8-5, holidays and weekends off. Nursing is a very flexible profession; it pays well enough that you could work part time and support yourself if you're careful.
