Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Program questions!?

Category: Health Care

CindyCindy

Well I'm been thinking that I may want to become a sonographer but I still don't know a lot about it. I found a accredited program where I live already but I have a few questions.

1) If you specialize in something how many more years of schooling do you have to do? and is the salary a lot more than just general sonographers? Oh and also can you just enter the program after high school or do you have to take college classes first? And how are the classes in the program are they hard what are some of the things you do?

2) is it hard to get into the program, like is there a long waiting list? what kind of stuff do they consider when you apply?

3) How much money do you make annually? how much money did you make your first year out of school and how much do you make now (and please tell me how long you have been in the field as well, and also I know its weird to just write you salary but I mean no one knows who you are and stuff and a rough average or estimate would be fine) bls.com says you make like 61,000 or so annually

4) Do you like your job? what are the pro's and con's? and what kind of places have you worked and which place did you enjoy working at the most?

5) lastly, was it hard to find a job when you first got out of school?

sorry for it being a bit long but thank you for reading and answering. also any added information you would like to add about the job and the schooling would be great

Some in the field on these boards have said that there are NOT supposed to be too many jobs for the sonographer. The site http://www.bls.gov/oco has general salary information as it might depend on one's geographic location and such.

If still interested in schooling, please forgo those private overpriced for-profit tech schools (such as 'sanford brown' and 'everest') and instead consider the more affordable program such as through the county community college. In order to possibly get accepted into the sonography program, one may need certain prerequisites from the college including college anatomy and physiology. (Each sonography program may have their own prerequisite courses needed and other requirements, so please check with the individual schools before taking certain classes.) If there is a waiting list at the community college, how about taking the required liberal arts for one's associate degree, in the meanhwile.
