Am I better to say what I really think, and show that I have some knowledge or current political events?, or avoid a topic I feel my opinion would not go in favour of the interviewer?

I would come out with "mom and apple pie" answers (it is a classic American saying). For example, you are for world peace, for honesty in government, and for the great political traditions of whatever country you live in.

Never ever say anything bad about any major political party or leader. in your country.

However, if you are asked for your political opinion when applying for a position in the United States of America, asking you for your political leanings may be illegal depending on how it is phrased. If you do not get the position and suspect it is due to this, go see an employment lawyer.

Take the neutral approach or avoid the topic all together if you don't agree with the person.

Tell the truth. Your opinion matters just as much as theirs. Tell it right off bat. But be sure to be respectful in your choice of words. Stalling shows them that you are scared to voice your opinion. That can work for you if you plan on working as a mouse. Or stalling can work against you if they are looking for a strong, independently thinking person. If they can not respect your opinion than I would suggest looking else where for the job, relationship or what have you.
