Im thinking about joining the cadet program for the Civil Air Patrol. What are your guys thoughts about that?

My youngest son became an Eagle Scout, and then joined the CAP cadet program. He says that becoming a Cadet Major is about as difficult as becoming an Eagle Scout, and he expects to be a Cadet Colonel in the next six months.

Grade promotions in the cadet program require passing a PT test (sit-ups, push-ups, sit & reach, shuttle run and mile run), a written leadership test, a written aerospace test, a drill & ceremonies test, participation in a moral leadership & character development program, and approval by a promotion board of other cadets and your unit commander. A tall list of requirements, but one in which you may justifiably feel good about accomplishing.

CAP is a civilian voluntary organization, and is the official auxiliary of the US Air Force. As its auxiliary, CAP members are authorized to wear a uniform very similar to the Air Force uniform, but as a civilian volunteer organization, CAP membership does not require entering military service. CAP members that do join military services may qualify for initial promotions and pay increases, and their prior CAP experience may give a head start to other training qualifications.

Visit a local squadron meeting a few times and talk to some of the cadets. Check out some of the activities they have been doing, and be sure to visit CAP on the web at www.gocivilairpatrol.com. Participating in the CAP cadet program will help you discover your own strengths and weaknesses, and you will learn valuable skills to enable you to better serve your community, state and nation in times of their need.

Best Regards,

Frank E. Merrill, MAJ, CAP
