If you are asking "what makes a person qualified to serve on the board of directors of a non-profit?" The answer is it depends on what the organization defines. Some boards require a certain level of fundraising to support the organization, while others are looking for expertise in a particular area (legal issues, marketing, etc.). There is not a set of qualifications that can be used for the boards of all non-profits.

As far as the kinds of community service/volunteer jobs that exist in the world, the list is endless because each non-profit organization needs a different group of volunteers to operate.

If you look at http://www.idealist.org, you can find a huge list of organizations seeking volunteers in the US and internationally. They also have a number of helpful resources on Board management, including how to establish a board, importance of bylaws, and staff/board interactions. It's a good place to start.
