Sponsors for a nonprofit?

I am building a non-profit organization over this summer that will help me help other kids in Kenya (my home country) connect with impoverished kids in Kenya and build them up. I have all the ideas down (name, mission statement, etc.) but I need ideas from people who already have non-profits. Do you look for sponsors to fund the organization monetarily, or do you just fundraise A LOT and ask for donations A LOT? thanks

what were your first steps?

In order to solicit donations or collect funds, you must have an established non-profit organization. Your first step in the process is obtaining your 501(c)3 status. Go to the irs.gov website for details on how to do it. It is a time-consuming process. If you haven't started already, you won't be able to get the paperwork done so you can start fundraising this summer.

Once you have established the non-profit, you can start to ask for donations. Fundraising includes finding sponsors, holding special events, asking for gifts from individuals and more. Most of the time, non-profits use a combination of fundraising methods to generate income.

In addition to having the 501(c)3 status, you will need to be able to articulate exactly why you are raising money and what the funds will be used for. This is the key to the success of your organization. You must have a compelling reason for people or organizations to donate money.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
