How would I be able to start a non-profit organization?

I'm really interested in starting a non-profit organization, but I have no idea of where to begin. I want to get a group of kids/teens together and visit local hospices once or twice a week and keep the children there company. The organization would also accept donations to the hospices and make care packages. So first of all, where do I start? And second of all, would this be allowed at the hospices?

I know this is might be in the wrong category, so please don't state this fact below.

Also, I'm not legally an adult- does this make a difference?

You have a great idea. You do not have to start a non-profit organization to do the things you describe. Since you're not an adult yet, you can't sign the documents needed to create a non-profit. That shouldn't be a problem since you can work with exisiting non-profits to accomplish your goals.

Your first step is to contact the hospices in your area to see if they allow visitors and if they would be interested in care packages. Once you get the OK from the hospices, you can set up the visits and start asking for donations for the care packages.

If you are asking for cash for the care packages so you can buy the items to include in them, the donors will have to make donations to the hospice since it is already a non-profit organization that can accept the funds. If you are asking for donations of goods to include in the care packages, you'll have to let the hospice know what items you get from the donors so the hospice can send acknowledgments.
