How should I go about volunteering to help with web sites for nonprofit organizations?

I am interested in volunteering for nonprofit organizations. I don't like the kind of work they tend to have volunteers do. However, I have noticed a lot of sites have out of date information or have things broken on their sites that I can easily fix. I'm assuming having someone who can update the site would be extremely useful for any organization. What are some of the best ways to volunteer to do this?

There are sites that aggregate charitiable organizations seeking volunteers in multiple capacities, such as http://www.volunteermatch.org or http://www.idealist.org - you can go to those sites, and find such charities in your area seeking volunteers in specific positions.

If there are specific organizations that have websites with problems, you should contact them directly via email and tell them how you can help. Offer your services on a volunteer basis and see if they are interested. Sometimes, organizations don't know there are people with the type of computer/website skills you possess who are willing to volunteer their services.

Another possibility is to see if there is a local chapter that is part of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and ask if you can either attend an upcoming meeting where you can offer your services or if you can put a notice in one of their publications to let local organizations know about your interest in this type of volunteer work.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
