1-Check out your county, city, or state civil service website.

2-If there's a test posted for a position you qualify for, and if there's an on-line application, complete with your application fee, and either mail, or E mail by the postmarked date stated on the test announcement.

3-You'll get a notice stating the location and time where the test will be given.

4-After you take the test, you'll be notified of your results.

5-If you score high enough, you will be Canvassed (sent a letter from a prospective agency asking you if you're "still interested in this position") and if so, please respond; if you're not interested, reason why. If you don't respond, your name's taken off the Eligibility list.

6-If you're interviewed, it's the "Three-In-One" rule, meaning the three highest scorers are interviewed, one's picked, the others go back to the Eligible list.

7-Depending on your county, city or state's Civil Service laws, Eligible lists are active anywhere from 3-4 years; i.e. New York State's 4 years.

Suggestion: Don't go in as an Appointed (didn't take a test; only submitted his/her resume). If there are any layoffs, they're usually the first to go. Take a test, hope to score high, get interviewed/chosen, serve out your Probationary period, then get Certified=job security (although no job's secure in this economy); also, once Certified, take as many Promo tests as you can.

Good luck.
