Do government jobs check IRS or tax records in their pre-employment background investigation?

I've recently accepted a job offer with a governmental agency, and I'm curious to know if they do or allowed to check IRS or tax records in their pre-employment screenings. I was once told that searching IRS/tax records was prohibited by the 4th amendment (unlawful searches and seizures) but I'm unsure. Any help?

Actually, for a lot of federal jobs, you must actually under go an IRS audit. Yes searching those records is generally prohibited, that is why they have you sign a waiver that you will ALLOW this to happen. If you do not sign the waiver, then they will not process your application any further. |
