Why did they rescind the job offer?

I interviewed for a position and was offered the job a couple weeks ago. When the offer was made they gave me very little detail about the compensation. The next time we spoke I got the details and (having been prepared) counteroffered on the spot. They said that they were flexible and I was to meet with them today in person for what I thought was going to be a meeting to find a compromise and sign on the dotted line. I got a call this morning stating that they went with someone else who was just a bit more qualified than I was. They said it was not me -- that I was highly qualifed. I asked if it was my counteroffer and that I was very flexible on that and they said it was not that.
I am honestly shocked that they rescinded the offer. Everywhere I read it says that counteroffering is standard and mine was very liberal, not asking for too much. They said they thought I was highly qualified and that they will pass my resume around.
I am just so down now. It was very hard for me to counteroffer -- but everywhere you read it says you should because it shows that you value yourself and also over a lifetime women typically earn $500K less simply because (unlike men) they counteroffer less. Now I am truly afraid to do it again in the future.
Any thoughts, reassurances would be so valued!

I agree that women (and men too) need to be able to ask for what they want. And that your starting salary is an important thing to negotiate. It's just a really tough job market right now, where employers are cutting costs and can choose among lots of job applicants. Try not to second guess yourself. Maybe something happened internally with the employer, or maybe they really don't have any flexibility in the hiring budget. You can only focus on what you want/need in your job search...and be strategic yet realistic about it. If you were able to get this job offer in this challenging job market, you will get another!
