In medieval England, if a villager was no longer wanted in the village--say, he committed a crime or did something considered very shameful, or perhaps was too much of a nonconformist (and nonconformist wasn't considered a good thing then), the other villagers would set fire to his house--when he wasn't in it--in order to get him to leave. Nobody would help him rebuild. Firing from a job may not be that drastic, but it's still making someone leave who isn't wanted anymore. |
