Right now HS diploma is pretty much worthless

retail would be just about the only place where you will get a job.

These days there are way too many unemployed people that there are so many qualified individuals with college degrees and tons of experience looking for work.

Other than retail, restaurants, or fast-food there are not many options. Any good paying job will require SOME sort of education or formal training. If you are worried about competing with non-high school graduates...then you are in serious trouble.

The real unemployment rate is 22% and has been 20% or more for over a year. Among 16-24 y,o,s, the unemployment rate is at least 52%. Over 31 million Americans are desperately seeking work.

What can you DO that is worth an employer paying for? That's the key. You have to know how to do something worthwhile, and have proved it. Mostly experience is the proof. What have you done? What did you accomplish where and for whom?

As for "decent," with all that competition for jobs, the tremendous stresses and cost burdens employers are under, hardly anything is really "decent" anymore. Salaried employees are working, on average, about 60 hours a week for no overtime and no increase in pay. Practically everyone is struggling to get by, and the economy is about to take another nosedive.

It is up to you to convince someone that you can do something worth being paid for. Figure out what you can do and how to market those accomplishments to employers.

It depends on what you want to do. Are you interested in joining the military? You can get a decent wage, great benefits and service your country at the same time. Also, I'm not sure if your work with your hands but some shipyard and construction jobs hire high school graduates. There are always retail and restaurant jobs that are available. While I was in college I worked part time at a call center and collection agency and I started out with 10.50 p/h, which is not bad for someone with a hs diploma. Also I worked for Wal-Mart and Target and earned "ok" money but the work can be draining.

Yes, HS graduates have better chances of being hired than non-graduates. Your diploma shows that you can stick with something.

Now that there are so many college graduates out there, employers are raising the bar, asking for college graduates where in the past they would have asked for high school graduates. So be prepared for that.

If I were you I would seriously consider an apprenticeship. There's a link to the department of labor's website about apprenticeships below.

Also, you do not have to be "on unemployment" to go down to the unemployment office and use the services of the One-Stop Career Center. They'll help you with job applications. You can even use their computers and fax machines. It's a tough time to be looking for a job, so take advantage of the resources available to you.

Finally, I don't know what it's like at the temp agencies right now, but I have gotten some decent jobs from them in the past. Sometimes employers like to "try before they buy," so if you take a temp job it can turn into something permanent. I put the address of Manpower below, but ask around. There may be a better-connected agency near you.

Good luck.

PS Just learned about the Job Corps--you might want to learn about the training opportunities available thanks to the Department of Labor. Again, good luck.

A Good Decent Job, You won't. EveryOne is correct in saying retail/ food are the only places. The same goes for older people like myself without an education.
