Should I tell my boss I'm looking for another job? Going for an interview?

I have been at my current job for 4 years now and have never received a bad review. I have been offered other jobs at other companies, but I liked my job and didn't want to leave. A LOT of my friends at work left for the other jobs for more money, and I was left with my finger in the dam many times. So this past year, I was asked to take a new job, filling in a key position for one of my co-workers that left for a better paying job. This meant I had a new boss and for the first time since I've been here, I didn't get a yearly cost of living raise. He gave me a "average" on my performance review, and thus said that "my compensation will not be increased at this time." I was taking on a new job with new responsibilities WITH NO ONE TRAINING ME! I learned it all on my on. I took the job as a favor to the company to help out in a key position during a bad economy. If I were still with my old boss, doing my own job, I would've gotten the raise. Anyway, I'm angry and I want to storm in there and list the jobs that I have been offered in the past four years that I have turned down because I liked the direction our company is going and wanted to stay here. I feel like if I let them know that I'm now considering other opportunities that maybe he'll change his mind and offer me my raise. And if I'm asked for an interview I'll use a vacation day to go for the interview. Should I tell him that I'm taking the day off to go for an interview? I mean, I don't want to lie about it for one, but I also want him/them to know I'm seriously offended for not getting a raise while others did and I'm also serious about taking another job should the opportunity arise.

I agree--don't tell the boss that you are considering other jobs. Wait until you have an offer with a higher salary, then go back to him and ask him to match the salary with a raise.

It's possible that he didn't give you a raise because he's under pressure to cut back. If you are concerned that you were unfairly reviewed, then you should tell him so, but don't threaten about other interviews until you actually have a job offer.

Definitely not!
