Have you ever been a member of a team? If so, you should try to be honest about this if you want to be placed in the right job. However, interviewers are commonly mistaken in believing that the perfect candidate actually exists, and they will expect correct answers to most of their questions. If you are facing such an interviewer, and you need a correct answer to get you into the right job, then I have this advice:

Being a team player means doing everything you can to achieve the goal at hand by supporting each member of the team in their individual roles in achieving the common goal. Depending upon the situation, sometimes it is necessary to direct and move people into roles where they can use their natural abilities in the most productive manner.

If you want a management job, then you better answer in some form of the above. Your role is to support your people and help them in their roles and to reassign them or get rid of them if they cannot achieve their goals.

A team players is someone that can take advice from others and, recognize good advice from expereinced people, and apply that in my day to day. Also sharing my ideas with the group, and gracefully accepting constructive critisism in the process.. Basically, it's understanding the team dynamic, no superstars, just the team getting the job done the best way possible.

The role I play in the team is generally the assistant coach, given enough time with the job. As I learn things from other people, I like to pass that knowledge along to my other team members so we are all on the same page, share the knowledge I have and encourage people to do the same.

I try to create an environment that guides people away from petty disagreements, and try to quickly and politely shut down rumor and speculation, encouraging others to get all the facts first before making quick decisions.

Basically what they're asking is how well do you work in a group of people, and what role do you usually take when working with a group. They're also asking what you think it means for an individual to be working in a group. They're asking you that with respect to your role in a group, how does that benefit the group as a whole. Like what could you bring to the table in order to help complete a task.

These kind of questions are something you have to answer yourself with your own thoughts and experiences. No one else can 100% answer them for you. For example, when I work in a group, I may not take the same role as you would.
