Is a degree meaningless or does going to a top school change that?

Category: Financial Services

I keep hearing how the world has changed and that a lot of people have degrees and other credentials. Yet, it seems that going to a top tier college or a top college should give a good advantage. Won't there always be a demand for brand name schools?

It's not the degree per se; it's your skills. Most likely, your major and grades will determine your skills, but often in conjunction with testing. Some employers will screen initially by GPA, while others will give on-site interview practical exams.

The thing you need most, however, whether or not you have a degree, is experience; and depending on the employer, not just a few years of experience, but a few years of SPECIFIC experience! With a slack job market (many workers but few jobs), employers are taking full advantage and demanding what they see as only the cream of the crop.

(Other attributes, such as soft skills and even personal appearance may carry considerable weight.)

Get a degree and top grades for a highly-demanded field, hope for the best, but expect the worst - at least for the time being.

It's not the school.

Its the degree that matters.

Stay away from liberal arts, or business administration.

Go into engineering, accounting, or becoming a doctor.

A degree that will actually get you a paying job.

A degree isn't meaningless. But a degree from a top school is more marketable.
