How can I reach my goal without a degree?

I am in accounts. I have no degree but I do have really good GCSE's and some A-levels.
I'm 19 so I literally came out of college and went into work. I was very lucky to get this job as it is entry level (even though I am basically running the accounts at a branch of a much larger company) and my boss said there will be prospects of me learning whilst working and getting some qualifications in a couple of months. I ideally would like to get to Chartered Accountant status eventually. What qualifications will help me get there? The ATT is what I was going to study but I have heard from a Chartered Accountant that I would be wasting my time on that course and should be doing CIMA? (I think that is the qualification).
So now I'm very confused and don't know what to study!
