Do you get paid more if you speak more languages?

Category: Financial Services

I was wondering, if, and how much, people get paid. Yeah, I know it depends on where you work but don't people usually receive a salary increase by about 20% if they speak more languages?

I have a GCSE in Arabic and am currently studying french, about to do my GCSE.

Some companies will even exploit you because you speak an extra language....asking you to speak it when your peers dont have to and you are being paid the same. That chokes!

Yes you do. One of my friends speaks spanish and he got paid a dollar more than everyone else. It was a retail job. But it can vary from work environments.

ONLY if your job requires or recommends such a skill. 20%!!!??? Are you joking?? At most, expect 5%. If your job in NO WAY requires you to speak Arabic, you don't get anything extra. It has the same usefulness as being able to tap dance or perform magic tricks.

Not really

It totally depends on what you are doing. If the company has no need for employees to speak other languages, it won't make any difference in your pay even if you are fluent in 15 different languages....and expecting 20% extra (even in a bi- or tri-lingual company) is dreaming.

Depends on the company and if they have a need for someone who speaks certain languages - obviously, it would have to be a company that does a lot of phone work/communication with other countries

it's not going to get you any more more money - it might allow you to get a job, you wouldn't be able to get if you didn't know a certain language, but that's about it

Call centers give language premiums.. or if you are fluent (and i mean FLUENT like how you speak english) in another language, then you can definitely have a look at investment banking. It's a tough career, but that's where all the money is.
