You have a secretary that has been at the company almost 40 years and you have one that has been there almost 10. They both do the same job. They are equals. The staff treats all the secretaries the same neither has to answer to the other. Do you think the one that been their the least amount of time has to do as the one who been their longer says. Does she has to speak first because she has been there less amount of years.

Hello Chicken:

As an office professional, your question is a good one. While both staffers may perform the same job duties, there is an added respect for the person who has been there 40 years, for sticking it out and performing their best all these years. The person with 10 years there, has a duty to watch and learn from the person with more longevity (means: longer time on the job), even though they may not report to that person. As colleagues, they are equals. Experience and wisdom will always have the best answers. In rare cases where the 10-year person has more internet or technology expertise, they will be expected to share that experience with their office mate to maintain the efficient and successful atmosphere that has been built through that service over 40 years.

As far as "do as the one who been their longer says", consider why that person is saying what they're saying. It's not just to hear themselves speak, but rather so that the person with less experience can benefit from that knowledge and avoid mistakes in the future.

Good luck to another successful 40 years!

The only person one needs to heed is the words of thier boss. Have a great day.
