Should I take on tasks that I feel out of my depth with at work?

Category: Administrative & Office Support

Three years ago I began an admin job, but within a short period of time it was apparent that someone with client contact skills would need to be taken on in addition to me - as I lacked these certain skills. I understood this, and agreed, and in fact I worked very well as an assistant to the person who was employed. Now however, this person has left, and the general assumption seems to be that I will now do their work - which I have to say I still feel out of my depth with, whilst my admin tasks will now be done by volunteers. My strengths are still in admin and not in client contact, so I'm not sure what to do. I meet with my boss to discuss the matter soon, but I would be interested to hear what thoughts other people might have on this. Should I take on more? I cannot afford to do the voluntary work.

If you never take on tasks with which you feel out of your depth, you'll never learn & grow as a person, much less as a valued employee. The time that you spent assisting the coworker with client service skills should have been time that you were using to learn these skills from that person; this is why you're now expected to take on those duties.

If you are interested in keeping your job and doing it well, I recommend requesting additional training on client contact/customer service skills.
