On the electronic I-9, what is a 'department code'?

Category: Administrative & Office Support

I'm filling out Hireright's electronic version of the I-9 employment form. At the bottom of section one, under the optional preparer's signature, it asks for the "Cost Center/ Source Code/ Department Code". What does this mean? It's a required field so I can't leave it blank or put n/a.

This information is going to be unique to each company. There is no way for us to know what it is.

If you are the recruiter, you will have to talk to your co-workers/hireright

If you are a recent hire, you will have to talk to the recruiter.
