How to ask a previous employer to rehire you...?

Last year I worked at a golf course as a cart girl and I loved the job, I was an excellent employee and gave 100% however when the summer came to an end I had to return to school in another city. They were aware this was going to be the case. They said I could use them as a reference (further proving they thought I was a good employee). I came back this summer only to realize employment was scarce in my city and how much I liked working at the golf course, it was a great job. (Another fact, last year I was taking summer school which cut into my hours and may have inconvenienced them) this year that is not the case as my whole summer is free. Which would be even better for them. My boss is a woman and has a bit of an attitude so I was wondering if you could help me approach this. I would like to call them and ask for my job back, how do I go about phrasing it to make me sound the most professional I can without sounding too desperate??

Thank you!

Call you old boss, exchange a few pleasantries, and then be honest: "I really enjoyed working at the golf course and, if you have any positions open, I'd like to return for the summer."

If she balks at how you weren't available for classes, say "This year, I have no other obligations so I can definitely work whatever hours work for you."

It's OK to be desperate. Point is, they know you. If they liked you, you're a better hire than someone that they've never met. You are a low risk choice.
