Accidental over billed my hours worked, what should i do?
I work as a subcontractor and make my own hours which mean i have to keep track of them throughout the month to submit to the contracting company. This month i had 8 clients, all in similar circumstances. When writing the report (it was late at night), i wrote all of them at the same time, it took approximately 10 hours to complete all of them, needless to say i was exhausted and wasn't focusing as much as i should. somehow in the sleepy haze i billed about 15 extra hours, the company i work for called me and questioned this, suspecting i padded the hours i assume. i told them the truth that i must have made some mistakes and i will go over it again. they responded by saying "go over your timesheet very carefully and take your time".
i know it looks bad from their perspective, and i can't believe i could be so foolish as to let this slip like this. does anyone have any suggestions to alleviate this problem, anything i could tell them that might ease their concerns because right now it seems that they think i just pad my hours. what's even worse that some dates on the reports didn't match up with my timesheet, making it look even more suspicious.
any suggestions on what i should do?

They told you what to do. "Go over your timesheet very carefully and take your time". I would suggest you do that from here on out or you will not be working with them much longer. |

You should send them a corrected bill. You should apologize and admit that it was unprofessional, without making excuses. And you should tell them that you completely understand if they would prefer to find a new subcontractor. That is the best route, and has the best chance if any of you getting any work from them going forward ... and avoiding a law suit. |

As your boss said, go over it carefully and re-submit it with any supporting documents you may have to each job- a receipt or work order or something with the clients signature on it. Also, perhaps a letter explaining the situation, letting them know you were not at all trying to deceive them and that in future you will make time to correctly fill in your time sheet. |
