Position Summary: About Us: Houghton Mifflin School Division publishes resources for teachers, students, and parents for pre-K–8.
The School Division's renowned author teams rely on extensive market and independent research to inform the pedagogical structure of each program.
Ancillary products such as workbooks, teacher guides, audio-visual guides, and computer software provide additional support for students and teachers at each grade level.
The Company's leadership in the school market began at the turn of the twentieth century when the Education Division was formed.
Houghton Mifflin emerged as a leader in language arts in the 1920s with the Bolenius readers, continued in the 1950s with the McKee series, and is carried on by Houghton Mifflin Reading, Leveled Readers, and top products in reading intervention, English, and spelling.
Today, one in four Americans learned to read using Houghton Mifflin programs.
Houghton Mifflin School Division publishes science, reading, language arts, mathematics, and social studies textbooks, as well as an integrated pre-K curriculum.

For additional information, visit our website at www.educationplace.com. Responsibilities: The social studies department of Houghton Mifflin Publishing’s school division develops elementary school social studies texts for students and teachers in grades K-6 across the United States.
Our products include textbooks for students, teachers’ guides, and ancillary products (which may include sample test books, activity books, vocabulary cards, and other materials that teachers might use in the classroom).
We currently have several openings in our department for full-time project employees, who are hired on contract.
The Editor, with some supervision, edits manuscript according to project guidelines, schedules, budgets, and divisional standards of quality and accuracy; writes or rewrites portions of manuscript; proofreads copy and makes necessary corrections.
Editors are also required to demonstrate increasing content knowledge for assigned projects; to become familiar with and apply knowledge of market research to text and also have a thorough understanding of all relevant state and national standards.
The Editor will also be asked to prepare manuscripts for release, develop or check page layouts, and implement all steps in the production process for assigned projects, works closely with design and photo research on page layouts, photo selection, and creation of illustrations.
Additional responsibilities include effectively utilizing technology tools in the publishing process to facilitate development efficiency and to enhance product quality.
Requirements We need editors who write well and who can work quickly to meet deadlines, who can express complex ideas in simple language for young readers, who understand good research and fact-checking practices, who are well-organized and hard-working, and who either have some knowledge of or a real interest in learning about United States history and geography.
Minimum of 2-3 years experience.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Qualified applicants will have exceptional organizational skills and be able to meet all deadlines.
B.A/B.S required.
This is a full-time W2 “Project Employee” position, with a contractual duration of 6 months to 1 year.
