AVP & Assistant Controller, US Investments

Reporting to the US Investment Controller, this position is accountable for providing accurate and timely financial and control support, ranging from policy setting through to implementation, to a diverse client base within the Investment Division, as well as across the organization.

Services include financial forecasting, reporting and analysis, accounting, and control activities.

Operational Management Provide quarterly CGAAP, USGAAP and Statutory reporting and analysis on Invested Assets held in the US to the Corporate Division.

This is done through monthly and quarterly reports and meetings, and information is gathered from Investment sub-systems.

Manage USGAAP, CGAAP and Statutory reporting for the invested assets of Financial held in its US Subsidiaries, as well as the reporting for any designated Investment Division US subsidiaries.

Ensure all financial reporting and analysis standards and requirements are met on a timely basis by managing to the internal calendar.

Manage the accounting for the book of other invested assets (“Schedule BA”), such as Funds, Limited Partnerships, etc. that require complex, non-standard transactions.

Report investment income results on time and accurately to external MFC stakeholders, such as Corporate and Insurance Operations.

Functional Management Document the Company's/Division's interpretation of new accounting guidelines, e.

g., FASB, and the resulting Divisional accounting policies & procedures.

Ensure the delivery of required US Investment Division information for internal and external audits and Sarbanes-Oxley requirements.

Through the provision of forecasted investment income results, assist US Divisional business units with the annual budgeting/planning process.

As actual results are documented, aid in the analysis of actual to forecast results.

Provide technical assistance to US Investment Division management for both broad changes, such as new CGAAP requirements, and in specific divisional initiatives, such as a new hedging program.

Requirements: Bachelors Degree, CPA/CA designation required.

MBA/CFA preferred Minimum 10 years of experience, with progressive responsibility within the Investment Accounting field, including experience managing an accounting group in a large organization required Thorough knowledge of investment vehicles/products/terminology (including derivatives) as well as complex securities and the accounting associated with them Strong knowledge of GAAP (Canadian, US), with the ability to communicate and explain the differences, as well as knowledge of US Stat and life insurance accounting Excellent oral and written communications skills in order to present to and work with Investment/ Insurance/Corporate senior executives Strong interpersonal skills to interact and influence in a multi-Divisional organization and to build relationships among internal and industry peers for best practices/policy development Strong team leadership, team motivation, team development skills Ability to handle multiple complex tasks concurrently Strong managerial skills with the ability to provide leadership and direction on critical matters within tight time lines FinanceLadder.com is a comprehensive resource for executive level jobs in the field of Accounting, Finance Economics, Banking, Insurance, Investments and more.
